Texting while driving has been illegal in Michigan, as well as other states, for some time now. However, the city of Troy is taking enforcement to a whole new level with some of the most draconian distracted-driving ordinances in the nation. According to the new law, a driver can catch a ticket for engaging in any activity that competes for their attention while driving. This certainly includes texting and talking on cell phones, not to mention taking your eyes off the road while you take a swig from a flask of Jack Daniels, but also drinking coffee, smoking cigarettes, and reaching into the back seat to separate your children if they get too rowdy.
Offenders can look forward to hundreds of dollars in fines and points on their licenses. For more on these new ordinances, check out this post on Michigan distracted driving laws.
