A study conducted by the Texas Transportation Institute at the Texas A&M University shows a marked decrease in traffic accidents, and accident-related injuries, at intersections that feature so-called “red light cameras” – contraptions that photograph cars that run red lights, allowing cops to ticket drivers after the fact.

Department of Transportation estimates show that around 100,000 crashes and 1,000 fatalities occur each year due to drivers running red lights. The TTI study showed that installing a red light camera at an intersection has a significant preventive effect, causing an average drop of over 20 percent in red light violations. Both driving and car transportation are significantly safer as a result.

Have you guys heard of this story? Yesterday on DL-Online I read that a family of five chased down a drunk driver after nearly being hit in a head on collision by said driver. Did I mention that the wife was also 29 weeks pregnant? So really, it was only a few months away from being a family of six. The family followed the drunk driver, while phoning police, until the man was apprehended. The driver even noticed he was being followed and tried to lose the family—but to no avail.

While it was courageous what they did, it was more than a little ill-advised. The police themselves have encouraged calls in cases of drunk and reckless driving but not engagement. But it was fortunate that no one was hurt, for everyone involved.

We advise drivers not to drive impaired but if you should need an expert Michigan DUI attorney, call immediately. There is no time to lose!

Texting while driving has been illegal in Michigan, as well as other states, for some time now. However, the city of Troy is taking enforcement to a whole new level with some of the most draconian distracted-driving ordinances in the nation. According to the new law, a driver can catch a ticket for engaging in any activity that competes for their attention while driving. This certainly includes texting and talking on cell phones, not to mention taking your eyes off the road while you take a swig from a flask of Jack Daniels, but also drinking coffee, smoking cigarettes, and reaching into the back seat to separate your children if they get too rowdy.
Offenders can look forward to hundreds of dollars in fines and points on their licenses. For more on these new ordinances, check out this post on Michigan distracted driving laws.
